Urbanfarmz began in a 2-bedroom apartment close to downtown Austin. Through previous ventures, a passion for alternative grow methods continued and I had my first “grow room” just outside our bedroom on an 8 x 20 patio. From there it grew. Friends often would ask how things were growing (ha) and wanted updates. I bought a domain, found hosting, and www.urbanfarmz.com was launched to accomplish this.
One of the things that I found was over time you learn little things that improve your processes. Sharing these things was fun for me. When folks showed an interest I’d start the out with a squirt bottle of foilage feed and say “go find a plant you like and give them this every time you pass the plant”. They would either come back and say “what’s next?” or I wouldn’t hear back.
After 3 years of growing my wife and I finally bought a house. More space! A buddy and I built a work bench (link) and then added a grow cabinet underneath it. My wife thought we were done there but allowed me to feed the passion further (with the help of Craigslist!) and I purchased an 18-pot multi-flow system.
6-months later we have a nursery where we take plants destined for the trash and nurse them back to health. Once the plant is healthy we put it in the hydrofarm, maximize its grow potential, and sell combinations of them in fully planted pots (link). We don’t make much on them but the hobby is fun and there seems to be enough buyers!
Thanks for visiting and if you are interested in seeing the new projects as they come up please join the newsletter (link) for updates!
